I've just completed the installation of Gentoo Linux. clap.gif biggrin.gif

I'm now trying to install packages from the Packages CD. I mount the cdrom drive and then use the export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom" command. I then try using emerge to begin installation of the packages. It starts by calculating the dependancies, then tries to connect to the internet, with the result that no packages can be installed because I don't have an internet connection crying.gif . I did a stage 3 install on my PC. Why is Portage trying to connect to the internet if I have the package CD?

How do I curb this problem? ermm.gif

Should try copying them to /usr/portage/packages/All/ instead. It will not work if you put them in the distfiles directory.

1. type -> nano /etc/make.conf
2. add -> DISTDIR=/mnt/cdrom/All
3. type -> mount /mnt/cdrom
4. now try emerge...

Now that I've got packages to install, how do I get a pretty graphic screen at login? Do I have to change the runlevel? And also, at the login screen how do I choose the environment I want X to go into i.e. fluxbox, gnome?

You need to add xdm to the run level:
CODE
rc-update add xdm default

Than you need to edit you /etc/rc.conf file at the very end to reflect you graphical logon manager and you desired desktop manager though the desktop one is not important since if you are using gdm than there will be an option to choose.
