How do I detach a process in the terminal? Since I want to ssh into varsity, start a download and than detach the process so that I can log out and log back in later reattach it to check the progress of it.

you need to install a program called "SCREEN"

Then you type screen wget "ftp/is.co.za/file"

or

screen scrollz

or

screen BitchX

this will run the program or process in a screen thats detachable

you then hit CTRL+A+D to detach

to resume the screen you type screen -r
you may have multiple screens running and can then say
screen -r pid to resume the one you want

all my torrents run off screen

#screen btdownloadcurses.py lostepisode19.torrent
#CTRL+A+D

come back later to see how its doing biggrin.gif

alternatively you just use wget -b which does a background download.

It will then log it's progress to a log file which you can refer to when you want to know how far it is.
