QUOTE
With the imminent demise of the product known as Red Hat Linux, many people are asking, "Where do I go next?" For IT decision-makers, the question couldn't come at a worse time. Just as Microsoft is dropping support for their most popular version of Windows, prodding budget-conscious managers to consider Linux on the organization desktop, the best-known Linux distribution is suddenly no longer a part of the solution set at the retail level.

Linux is becoming more and more fragmented. This 'fragmentation" has had a large part in it's success but may also lead to it's demise.

Heksanol:
Mandrake is somewhat more "geared for the newbie" than Red Hat, but they both share many ease-of-use aspects.

Ease of use is relative term, and I don't want to get into "this is better than that" argument, but I really think that all the packadge based distro's are heading for the recycle bin.

Struggling half an hour on Mandrake to just get the internet connection up and running really isn't funny. I would say back to the roots, console roots that is...

Mandrake has a Red Hat base. On the issue of "fragmentation" as you put it,
it always has been that way. IMHO most of the ppl that use linux are
enthusiasts. My_World heheehehhe /me chants console!

Yeah, good point. I guess what I mean is that I hope this LSB Standards thing works, bacause there are so many different things happening in Linux it's exciting and frustrating at the same time, anyways, just an opinion biggrin.gif .

Well, I'll be running Fedora 24/7 soon! And then I'll giv you my view (pros and cons) of the OS! If I don't like it then Gentoo here I come!

I've never used SuSe and I don't plan on it! I've heard a lot of good things about Gentoo, so that will be my route! sad.gif

I've been running it for a day or two. Got the 3 cds from linux warehouse.
The kernel is a bit skrew'd up tho and no alsa packages sad.gif, but its ok tho.
I compiled a vanilla 2.4.22 kernel on it and alsa seemed to work after that. Its very easy to use and openoffice and konquerer is a plus.

Oh and btw Ximian Gnome looks way better and is quite a bite faster than KDE
IMHO is Fedora is great for those multimedia junkies, noobs and for office
use.
