Ok, i downloaded two freebsd 5.0 iso's from is.co.za, it turns out cd1 was the Mini Install and cd2 a bunch of arb packages? Something like that... anyways... no biggie, i write the cd's pop them in and wham.
Goes through the whole boot process, but then jams on a certain procedure "Resetting all devices" or something to such effect.
I ran the same cd on my brothers pc, got a bunch of "null" errors or something, but it entered the installation pretty cleanly.
Any ideas as to why my pc would jam on "Resetting all devices"? I dont have any arb external devices that could cause any problems... so im lost tongue.gif

I installed FreeBSD 4.8 between 12am and 2am this morning. Just from the installation i can see that it is much more "practical" and solid, if u can call it that, than linux.

The only problem i got was with X-Windows. While i do know that using the console is more powerful and i would learn more by using it.... i still need xwindows to chat and browse sites. ermm.gif

hmm...silverwing, this is very odd. I ran into the same problem yesterday while trying to install 4.7. I googled and it seems that it is an incompatibility with the cdrom.

you can try this tho, this was one of the workarounds, but it didnt work for me.
When you get to the point where it says something like "booting kernel in X seconds" and starts counting down, press 'i' then type the following :

CODE

set hw.ata.ata_dma="0"
set hw.ata.atapi_dma="0"
boot

hope this helps :/

now i just have to find another solution cos i thought it was 4.7 :`(

Ah thanks aquadog.
I was thinking i wasted two weekends of downloading.
I'll try that and google for more, just in case. My cdrom has always been gay... but really... tongue.gif

disable excess bios gayness..
No Shadows, no virus checking, no pnp os, disable usb controllers, serial, whatever you dont need. Try eliminate possibilities.

Check the hardware support list, I reckon you'll find its probably supported - if not then at least you know. But otherwise you can play around.. There's always a way smile.gif
