Hmm, I did it again, I'll leave it on abit more.
Don't get me wrong, FreeBSD is powerful, stable, easy.
It generally comes down to personal opinion in the end. I've seen someone running an Alpha Release of the Linux 2.5 Kernal, It is really a huge improvement over 2.4.
I would still recommend everyone to try FreeBSD aswell as OpenBSD, I hope that there will be an even 50 - 50 desktop market share between Linux and FreeBSD, really, lovely OS's.

I have used Linux for a couple of years now, but a month ago i installed FreeBSD for the first time, and everything just worked so much more the way i want it to; software is less troublesome to manage, the kernel is a breeze to rebuild, etc... But then you have to consider the fact that i DONT play games, I almost never use a gui and i mostly do programming on my pc, so it all depends on the type of user you are.
For *NIX noobs i say just get Linux and use that for a while, and for people who are competent Linux users and wanna spread their horizons a bit, give *BSD a look and figure out for yourself what you prefer.

only thing though is the mind set you find yourself in after a while.
I'd say...instead of gaming, for about twenty minutes after he finally arrived at Mayhem he was showing me all the desktop environments on his FreeBSD virtual machine. :-P

High,
After beening flooded with how bsd 0wns linux's lame ass dailiy, I've decided to give BSD a try...
Two questions tho, FreeBSD 'n OpenBSD which is better ? Also where would be a good place to down load either ? ftp.is.co.za is the only local place i know of...
If you looking to host a server, very secure etc, go for OpenBSD. Otherwise i would recomend going for FreeBSD in the begining. Then at a later stage you can make up your mind.
I would recomend going for 5.1 Stable, the best place to get it from would be either ftp.za.freebsd.org (if you are on UUNet's Backbone), otherwise ftp2.za.freebsd.org (if you are on IS or Telkom's backbone)

I'm planning on installing it as a server on a small home network, so I'll go for 5.1 Stable then...as for installing does it have its own installer like say red hat does ?
