Daniel Robbins accepts new position with Microsoft, finalizes transfer of Gentoo Technologies IP to the Gentoo Foundation

Gentoo founder and former Gentoo Chief Architect Daniel Robbins began a new position at Microsoft on 23 May 2005. According to drobbins: "I'm helping Microsoft to understand Open Source and community-based projects." While in the midst of hastily packing to move to Redmond, drobbins nonetheless managed to find the time to finalize the transfer of Gentoo's intellectual property (essentially copyrights on ebuilds and other software as well as soon-to-be trademarked Gentoo logos) to the not-for-profit Gentoo Foundation, Inc.

I knew that this would come up sooner or later.
There is discussion about it on the Gentoo Forums, and the general consensus is that he deserves this position. Remember he is at the moment $40 000,00 in debt because he devoted so much time to the gentoo project, and it really shows! If he had not been so dedicated to the project we would not have had this stunning distro!

I believe he will continue supporting Open-Source, and it is still a bit blury as to what his new job actually will be at MS. Will he help them to be more open minded to Open Source? Is he there just to lecture them on the concepts of how it is possible that Open Source can become so powerfull? We still don't know yet. I'm sure he will give us a statement later on detailing what his new position entails.

Al I can say, it's unexpected yes, but all the best to him!

Oh almost forgot, look at his CV, he worked for MS before he started Gentoo.

Helping Microsoft understand opensource? Is that like teaching a Kaspar Hauser Sociology in Latin?

Microsoft realised they are shooting themselves in the foot by fighting opensource, so they are at least making an effort to .... something. Who knows what they are up to.

there is a nice phrase to describe M$ business tactics
"embrace and extend"

there's an analogous verb taken from star trek:

"Borging" or "Borged"

Seems like there is a bit more under the bonnet than meets the eye:

I think everyone should understand that he had large credit card debts, that he tried everything he could to make it work fiscally, and that the community failed to provide the finances that would make it work.

His approach was technically superior to the other distros in its fundamental approach, and funding could have cured any detail problems. It was the right approach. He went broke, and we should all be sad at this.

The nice thing would have been if some government had funded him. None did.

Thus he works for Microsoft. I imagine he is sadly bitter about it all.

Namesys is also having payroll problems, though our problem is more due to my divorce than anything else.

oh for fucks sake...

If Hans Reiser stops working on reiserfs then it will be a sad day indeed. Where do I go to make the donations...

Silly thing though... a few months ago (close to a year?) the FreeBSD foundation had to come up with around $50k in order to maintain its status as a non-profit organisation (it is due to a law that just makes sure not just any company registers itself as a non-profit in order to qualify for tax cuts) and they only made donations possible through PayPal...

Now this sucks because PayPal refuses to offer accounts to South Africans. I emailed them the other day and bitched about it, but I haven't heard anything from them yet (over a week now). I imagine if enough people complain about it, they might make an effort to accomodate opening a few accounts for us.

So yeah, this is off topic, but if anyone reading this ever wanted a PayPal account, please head on over to www.paypal.com and send them an email expressing your disappointment in the length of which their services reach.

Thanks.
