Hey... dots.gif

I need to know what to install from ports to get a working XFree86 on FreeBSD... The stupid servers etc dont install everything as dependancies (probably coes some programs need the shared libs and u might not want to actualy run an XServer)

So far I have installed and compiled the XClient shared libs and its dependancies and XF86 4.2.0 server but xf86cfg wont start still and complains about missing fonts... so wtf fonts do I need?!?! All of them? And is there a script to port a working XServer and all the stuff it will need? (Anything other than porting KDE ) crying.gif

hey dude...

Something that ALWAYS works is to install XF86 from ports. Although its not a solution, its a good workaround, plus if you set your machine arch type in /etc/make.conf then you get an X server thats mostly optimised for your PC.

you probably know how to do this but just for the other ppl's sake :

cvsup using your ports-supfile (found in /usr/share/examples/cvsup/)
cd /usr/ports/sysutils/portupgrade/ and make && make install.

then cd / && portinstall xfree

All the X source will be downloaded (which is the bad thing) and compiled but the good thing is you will have a WORKING X server.

cheers

are you sure? did you try installing the portupgrade package like i said? the portupgrade package includes the portinstall util. Doesnt come with FreeBSD by default.

Anyways, even so, just cd /usr/ports/path/to/Xfree/ and do a make && make install && make clean. I mean, thats exactly what portinstall does for you anyways.

peace.

Yea thanks.. I got it working

Reading the manual works :/

cd /usr/ports/x11/XFree86-4/ ; make all install clean

Took just under an hour to download and install the remaining packages smile.gif

Now I just need to get the programs that I need.. which isnt much short of a browser (Opera is working very nicely smile.gif ) and a consol. tongue.gif

Strange that cvsup wants to know your local hostname.
Anyways, with any linux/unix box you *have* to include your ip address and local hostname in
your /etc/hosts file like so :

CODE

aquadog( at )gateway|~: cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1               localhost.fbsd.za.net localhost
192.168.1.11          gateway.fbsd.za.net gateway

Else you will run into problems like that.

cheers

cvsupit worked fine confused.gif

I think my host name *should* be correct.. Even if it isnt it is given out by my local DNS server anyway...

??

Karnaugh

I dont know if you know this

but I'm A DAMN noob with freebsd

I just loved it as a nat box which I had running at home, and the only reason why I did this was because I wanted to use Xp and megawank back then and XP didnt like each other much, so it was relativly simple to get the freebsd boxen to see megawan and use it as a nat

currently I'm running freebsd 5.1 on my notebook through virtual pc and I am battling my p00z of to get x running smoothly

I get it running but at its hugest and kakkest reso's

/me wanders off to find some help

Thats because virtual PC's video emulation probably sucks ass. Virtual PC's dont directly access your own hardware. they emulated their own hardware... X would probably run nicely if you booted it directly on the box.

I had huge issues installing X. I ran the file with a -configure paramater and it detects everything in your machine.

I'm not sure if this is going to help the resolution issue but it is worth a shot. You will have to go into the conf file and change a couple of things though, like your default depth, refresh rates etc. Once I did all that I managed to get it working nicely.

I reinstalled last night using VMware

and managed to get X working with the default drivers

Originally using virtual PC if I did the gui config ( xf86cfg ) and saved my settings, I'd get a blank black screen and couldnt even swap to a new bash prompt and would need to reset the machine

The same thing happens under vmware

I dont know if vmware emulates some hardware or not but I cant get my card configured

you will never configure your card directly in any virtual machine

set up X for the VMware display driver (not your geforce or whatever) forget any hardware you own - under vmware it effectivly doesnt exist
