Ok firstly i am a total Linux n00b, i am trying to get a redhat 9.0 system set up with 2 Realtek RTL-8139 Network cards and set it up as a router (yeah ok im reading alot of tutorials biggrin.gif )
the one card set to eht1 has a ip address of 192.168.129.1 mask 255.255.255.0 the card eth0 has an ip of 192.168.128.41 mask 255.255.255.0.
The problem is eth1 can see its side of the network perfectly but while trying to ping an address in the 192.168.128.x range i get the following
"Ping 192.168.128.41 icmp_seq=1 destionation host unreachable."
all the hardware is working 100%
any hints or tips to get both cards seeing their relavent sides of the network which is fundamental before i can even think or setting up a routing system.
Any help is appreciated.

That is very odd, since having both network cards with both networks correctly configured should have no problem at all pinging either. It's most likely a static route problem.

Open a terminal and type this:
CODE

route

and paste the output here.

DHCP must have been configured initially on one of the network cards.

169.254.*.* is a private DHCP subnet.

Read Here.

yes i know the story behind 169.254.x.x

What i dont understand is that eth1 has a static ip AND that 169.254 ip setup.

Still nothing, i have also tried changing the IP address of eth0 to 192.168.128.8 which i know is reserved to check for duplicates and no joy there either.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

this is kindof frustrating, even for me. Have you tried setting up the network cards from scratch? There's obviously something not kosher when looking ad your route output...

Have you checked the network cables.
Yeah yeah. I know, but check it anyways.

Good call and no offense taken, always start with the basics. Changed the cabling and nothing. Gonna just reload the box and see what joy that brings.

Heh... granted, but that is taking for granted you know where to start looking to get the problem sorted out. Fortunatly enough the box is brand new and dosent have any mission crittical daya on (yet) so a reinstillation is the quickest and easiest way of sorting the problem out, specially for a self proclaimed n00b like myself whistling.gif

well whatever it was it seems to be sorted out now... finally can get to actually gettign this thing up and running.
