Hi there guys and gals.

I'm busy d/l knoppix to have a look at, but am wondering which distro is a good one too start with for a newbie. I have a dialup, so whilst it'll take time, I can d/l it myself, unless there is someone in the Alberton area that I can get a copy from.

PS. I am willing to pay fair costs for the copying of the disks etc.

This subject has been covered many, many times before and I'm sure if you read a bit through the Linux thread you will see this same question has been asked and answered only two weeks ago...

Because I feel nice, I'll give you links to the threads and then you decide which is best for your needs!
one
two
three
another one
last one for now

Those are only the ones on the very first two pages of the Linux section, so browse a bit and I'm sure you will quickly find the answer to your question.

I shall consider myself slapped on the wrist My_World. Am busy reading the provided links even as I type this.

Addendum: Okay, so Gentoo is the way to go provided you're prepared to get your hands dirty, so to speak. Debian is easier to install and less under the hood work required, if I understand it all correctly.
I'd like to get hold of a copy of Knoppix as well as one of the above 2 distros, at least for now. Who is in Jhb that can help me please smile.gif Pretty please withstupid.gif

PLease keep in mind that I last played around with linux when it was RH6 or so and have forgotten most of it since then sad.gif

My vote heads to Mandrake for newbies, very nice distro it is too.

I read a few reviews about Xandros last night. It looks quite good. It even has an explorer-like shell. I'm thinking of trying it after my exams. Think it's any good?

Has anyone here tried SuSE 9.1 Personal? I'm thinking of downloading it and trying it.

Hmmm, OK. I'm a complete n00b to Linux. I want to setup a Linux server (with internet connection & firewall) to handle print server and firewall as well as file server, the internet connection will have to shared amongst the PC's. The server will be networked to 3 PC's (1x MS XP Pro, 1x MS XP Home, 1x MS Win 98SE - don't ask!).

I got Fedora core 3, Smoothwall 2.0, Mandriva 2005 LE (the one from the PCF July 2005 cover DVD) and Ubuntu Linux - all on CD.

Question is if any of the above will suit my needs, there are so many versions available but I just don't know what to use.

Any and all feedback will be highly appreciated.

AFAIK smoothwall just operates as a firewall.
All 3 distros are generally user friendly in terms of setting up linux. Each will be able to forefill the your needs since the software you require will probably come standard with each of the distro's package cd's or install cd's (iptables, shorewall, samba, cups, rp-pppoe, squid possibly). I would do a google search on < ubuntu + "home server" > for each distro to see what resources there are. I know the latest ubuntu offers more of a choice of software. Its feels more like a desktop distro rather than a server but for home I think it will be fine. Cant say I have had any experience with Mandrake/Mandriva. Fedora may not be a bad option.

Thanks Ravilj, will do the search. I had a look at the Mandriva homepage earlier and navigated around a bit, seems fine but couldn't get many specifics.

All the other apps you mention I have no knowledge of, so it's quite a learning curve for me ATM.

Oh yes, the setup will be for work, but my business isn't that big (as you can see 3x stations and a server).
