Hi, I know you can keep WIn98/ME from overwriting the MBR by using the /ir (x:\win98\install.exe /ir) command switch. Is it at all possible to do the same with Win XP Pro? I dual boot Win Xp and SuSE 8.0 and can't create a bootable stiffy cuz my drive is busted...so, if I reinstall XP it will kill the MBR. I use LILO as my boot manager. Also, my SuSE install CD isnt bootable too...yeah I know, pathetic shutup.gif
The /? command is useless in XP.
I have found several sites listing switches but none about saving the MBR.

Or any other way I can restore the MBR. I do have a CDRW.
Thanks.

aquadog: how, everytime i install XP it writes over the mbr, i always have to boot with the gentoo cd and restore lilo after installing XP.

you are proberbly going to have to get hold of a stuffy drive and make a bootup disk, dont u have an option when u boot from the suse cd, to restore the bootloader?

Mmmm VirtualForce.....
What I usually do is to use WinXp/NT/2000's mbr, instead of SuSE's.....this way, install WinXp 1st, and then Linux, without installing LILO to the MBR.....so, then I can do with SuSE what I want, even reinstall it, without mucking up Windows' MBR.

For SuSE, follow these steps:
1)Install XP, partition the disk with FAT so Linux can write to it.

2)Install Linux....for example on /dev/hda3.

3)Install LILO, but install it in the Linux Root Partition, eg. /dev/hda3, not in the MBR - /dev/hda!!

4)copy the LILO Bootsector to a location where WinXP can find it, for example
earth: # /bin/dd if=/dev/sda3 bs=512 count=1 of=/dos/bootsek.lin

5)Boot machine in to XP - copy bootsek.lin from the directory above to the main directory of XP's System Drive.....

Perform steps 4 and 5 after every Kernel update!

6)edit WinXP's boot.ini file, adding
c:\bootsek.lin="Linux"

7)On next boot, there should appear "Linux" in XP's boot manager!!

Hope this helps you out for the future, as you can faf around with linux, reinstall, whatever, without killing your WinXP MBR.....

Enjoy,
Br,
MrBean.
